I did 2 dives with Big Wave Diving in Puerto Escondido (PE). While it wasn't the most exciting dive locale (I knew in advance), it was a decent, fun morning session. I recommend diving in PE with Big Wave to anyone who, like me, is keen to explore new spots anywhere.

While on a motorcycle trip through Mexico, I had big intentions to dive in Baja. But due to time constraints and bad weather, I wasn't able to do any diving. By the time I got to Puerto Escondido, I learned it has a few dive centers, so I decided to "test the waters". I contacted a couple of shops, heard back from Big Wave Diving, and signed up for 2 dives the next morning. Big Wave is a small operation (the kind I like); Julia, the owner, is super energetic, basically a one-man band doing all the main tasks to run a dive operation.

We met up at 8:30 at the shop, fitted gear, then drove down to Playa Angelito, 5 minutes away, one of the nicest beaches in the PE area. From there, our group (4 fun divers, 1 open-water student) got into a small boat for a 10-minute ride to the first site. The second site was 5 minutes away.

PE is a surf destination, and the wave action underwater is also impressive, where you get swished around a lot. Given the wave action, the dive sites are mostly barren rock, with very little coral or other life. We did see a decent number of mostly small fish, with some small schools of medium-sized ones, a turtle, eagle ray, stingrays, morays and more. The highlight of the day was a massive fish skeleton, a marlin or other large billfish. I also found a pair of Oakley sunglasses, they'd been down there for a while.

Dive Center: Big Wave Diving

Cost: $113 for 2 dives, equipment included
