The 4th leg of my Honduras tour. A scenic ride from La Ceiba to Tegucigalpa, where I stayed one night, and then on to Los Manos to cross into Nicaragua the next day.
La Ceiba to Tegucigalpa
Though my original plan was to head east to Trujio and then south, my T7 front suspension collapsed 30km east of La Ceiba, and I needed to get it replaced there (will post a separate story on this). After that, I was itching to get moving south into Nicaragua, so I took the fastest and safest route possible.
The ride out of La Ceiba towards El Progresso has see some great scenery (I had arrived at night and missed it all). The mountains on the coastline are spectacular. After acoiple of house, the highway cuts south, winding through river valleys and mountains most of the way to Tegucigalpa. I travelled on a Sunday and experienced some of the best of Honduras' moto culture, especially closer to the capital, with groups of riders flying by on all types of bikes, most riding at maniacal speeds. The final stage into Tegucigalpa was cool, the city is set in the mountains and is built on hills.
I booked a room on Agoda in a nice area. Given the city's reputation for crime, I didn't stray too far after dark, walked about 400m to a nearby Chinese restaurant. As I was walking back, I saw a group of young guys across the road, all wearing matching white shirts. I thought it must be a gang, and I was a sure target. But, as I got close, I realised they were Mormon missionaries, standing outside the local LDS center.

Tegucigalpa to Los Manos
The next morning I was up and gone by 8 am. The ride out of the city was good as the ride in, up and down hills. There was little traffic and I was out of the city in about 20 minutes. Then it was into pine forest and a fast twisty ride on decent roads for about 3 hours. The road got progressively worse on the final section of the ride from El Paraiso to Los Manos, I think due to so many trucks on this route -- the last 5km or so the road was lined with semis. When I arrived at Los Manos, the temperature was 15 °C. Look for a separate post regarding the border crossing.
Why Los Manos? It looked to be the closest to Tegucigalpa, and it looked a bit more remote. I had heard the Honduras-Nicaragua border crossing is a nightmare for most riders. So I wanted to avoid the main crossing. I think it was a wise decision, as the crossing was fairly easy.
Ride: 130 km / 3 hours
