Costa Rica: Quepos

I did 1 day of diving, 2 dives in Quepos with Oceans Unlimited. The diving was meh, but overall still a decent day out.
After arriving at Quepos on my moto and checking into Miquel's Surf Camp, I visited the impressive Marina Pez Vela boat harbour, which is full of expensive-looking deep-sea fishing boats and twangy American accents. There, I came across Oceans Unlimited dive center, popped in, and registered for 2 dives.
The next day, I joined a group of about 8 divers, got fitted with rental gear, and then walked 2 minutes to the boat for a 20-minute cruise around the point to some small islands in front of Miguel Antonio Park.
Visibility was not good (it had been raining heavily in recent days). Unfortunately, there just wasn't much action in the water; it was fairly barren where we were, and we didn't see any large schools of fish or pelagics. I did get some nice views of the coast from their nice boat.
Maybe I hit it on a bad day? Some local insiders I met later told me that Quepos is just not great for diving. Hate to be negative Nelly here, but if you are a serious diver looking for an exciting experience, you may want to consider heading south to Drake Bay (Oceans Unlimited also has trips listed to Cano Island). If you are a newbie, Quepos would be a great place to learn, and Oceans Unlimited seemed like a very well-run operation, with excellent communication.
Dive Center: Oceans Unlimited
Cost: $150 for 2 dives w/ rental gear
